Training in the Rain: You Are Choosing Which Way to Get Wet

A fully waterproof jacket keeps rain out and keeps your own sweat in. Past a certain effort level you get wet either way — the only question is from which side.

Rain itself is rarely the problem. Being wet and cold is, and those are two different things that need two different answers.

The trade-off nobody states

Waterproofing and breathability pull against each other. A membrane that stops rain also slows the vapour you are producing, and at moderate effort you produce more than it can pass.

What each option actually does

For a hard session in mild rain, no jacket is often the correct answer. You get wet, but you would have anyway, and you stay considerably more comfortable.

In warm rain, the jacket is usually the mistake.

Cotton is worse in rain than anywhere else

Wet cotton holds several times its weight in water, stops insulating entirely and clings to skin. Every problem in this article is worse in cotton.

Fabrics in the wet

Wet fabric chafes far more

Water softens skin and makes fabric cling, so a garment that is fine dry can rub badly in rain. This catches people out on long sessions particularly.

  • Apply balm before you leave, not when it starts.
  • Avoid seams at the inner thigh and underarm in wet weather.
  • Fitted beats loose in rain — loose fabric flaps and rubs.
  • Check the waistband; wet drawcords work loose and slide.

Being seen matters more than being dry

Rain almost always means reduced light and reduced driver visibility. This is the genuine safety issue in wet training, and it is not about clothing comfort.

  • Reflective detail beats bright colour in low light.
  • Movement matters — reflectives on ankles and wrists read best.
  • A light is worth more than any garment.
  • Assume you are not seen at junctions, regardless of kit.

Shoes and the parts that stay wet

Feet and hands cause more discomfort in rain than the torso does, and both are cheap to solve.

A peaked cap under a hood is the single most effective thing on this list. It keeps rain off your face and stops the hood collapsing.

Drying kit afterwards

This is where wet-weather training actually costs you equipment, and almost all of it is avoidable.

  1. Unpack immediately — wet kit in a bag is the worst case.
  2. Hang, do not pile; airflow is what dries things.
  3. Never on a radiator — direct heat kills elastane.
  4. Stuff shoes with paper and remove the insoles.
  5. Wash sooner; road grit and damp accelerate everything.

Indoor sessions on wet days

Rain often means training indoors instead, and the kit problem shifts rather than disappearing: you arrive wet and then work in a warm room.

  • Change completely on arrival, including socks.
  • Hang the wet layer rather than stuffing it in a locker.
  • Expect the gym to be humid when everyone arrives wet.
  • Take a second dry top for the journey home.

One last thing worth saying plainly: rain is not a reason to skip a session, but it is a reason to shorten one. Cold, wet and tired is where people make bad decisions about traffic and about pushing on.

If the kit is right you will be fine. If you find yourself thinking about how cold you are rather than about the session, turn back — that is the signal, not the rainfall.

What should you wear training in the rain?

Synthetic layers, and fewer of them than you would expect. Above about eighteen degrees a light top and shorts with no shell is fine. Between ten and eighteen, add a long sleeve and a water-resistant layer. Below ten degrees, getting wet becomes a warmth problem and the layering logic changes.
